How to plan a relaxed, grown-up hen weekend in Somerset

Start with the bride, not the itinerary

A grown-up hen weekend is built around what the bride would actually enjoy: good food, time with her friends and some downtime, rather than a packed list of activities. Ask her, or her closest friend, what a perfect Saturday looks like, then plan backwards.

Choose a house that does the hosting for you

Staying in one house keeps everyone together without taxis between bars. Look for a table that seats the whole group, enough bathrooms for getting ready and individual beds for friends who would rather not share.

Every Little Upton house has its own hot tub and sauna. Vedalworks adds a bespoke cocktail bar and a cinema and karaoke room; The Pictureworks has a private spa room with a steam room.

A simple shape for the weekend

1. Friday: arrive from 4pm, settle in, a relaxed supper and a soak before the hot tub closes at 10pm.
2. Saturday: a slow breakfast, a walk to the village or a spa afternoon with treatments, then a long dinner together.
3. Sunday: breakfast, packing and check-out by 10am.

Let someone else cook the big dinner

A private chef turns Saturday night into the centrepiece without anyone missing it to cook. Our local suppliers include private chefs and caterers, booked and paid directly with them. Share dietary needs and timings early.

Add one or two activities, not five

Cocktail-making, life drawing, a dance class or treatments can all come to the house as paid extras. One activity each day is usually plenty; leave room for talking.

Celebrate within the house rules

Music and celebrating are welcome inside after 10pm; outdoor quiet hours run from 10pm to 8am. Unauthorised parties and extra visitors are not allowed, and the lead guest must be at least 28 unless agreed in advance. Tell us about any plans before booking.
